Hiring a car can be a minefield of hidden charges. Get it wrong and you will end up spending way over the odds, or worse, get stung with massive bills if you have an accident.

What car do you need?
First things first, be sensible about the type of car you will need. Do you really need a family saloon when a medium sized hatchback will do? Is a soft-top absolutely necessary? Even on the cheapest deals, getting a 4x4 can be more than double the price of a medium sized family model, so only rent what you need.
Car hire companies abroad will try to flog you all sorts of unnecessary extras when you arrive at the airport. Some will try to persuade you to upgrade or fob you off with one you did not order.
When you book online you will usually have to choose the size of car. If you don't get what you paide for then the car hire firm is breaching the contract. You are entitled to claim back any extra costs of getting what you were initially promised.
Get the cheapest cover
It's an old chestnut, but it still applies – shop around. Price comparison websites will search most, but not all, car hire firms for you. It's a simple process that requires you to enter your destination and travel details, as well as age and the type of car you want.
Travelsupermarket.com searches 25 firms, including Hertz, Holiday Autos (which compares deals from other companies), Avis, Alamo, Expedia, ebookers and Auto Europe. Bear in mind that a number of hire firms won't feature. It may be worth seeking separate quotes from companies such as Priceline, Car Rentals, Travelocity and Car Jet.
